Finding and connecting with knowledgeable wellness practitioners is a critical component of your wellness journey. But for people of color that are either seeking culturally competent care or intentionally want to spend their dollars to support a Black or Brown practitioner, this search can be difficult.

In this article, I’ll tell you a little bit more about the wellness Business Directory solution I’ve built to help ease your search.

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably done one of the following:

  • Performed a Google search and discovered a variety of directories, most of which focus primarily on therapists and mental health counselors, leaving you lost when searching for businesses within other wellness specialties.

  • Typed some variation of “Black pilates studio,” “Latino supplement brand,” or “South Asian yoga teacher” into the search function of a social media platform. This may have connected you to a few helpful results for businesses that specifically have this phrasing in their bio, but left you feeling like there’s much more out there.

  • Left it all up to chance, but became disillusioned with the algorithms, lists and media platforms that center non-diverse wellness practitioners, brands and resources.

I recognize your frustration and understand it deeply. This was my experience when I first started intentionally pouring into my wellness journey back in 2017.

After some frustrating experiences, I was prompted to jump on Meetup.com and create a group called “Yoga for Brown Girls” because I was so tired of being the only person that looked like me in my yoga classes, and wanted to connect with other women who knew of Black or Brown yoga instructors in my area. When it only took 2 weeks to reach over 300 members, this was the light bulb moment that pushed me to continue building digital wellness resources.

Thrivency is my best offering yet, and it’s built with the intention to connect you with local wellness practitioners and businesses that understand your unique journey.

On connecting you to culturally aligned care

So at this point, you’re probably wondering ‘How are you going to address all the problems you mentioned above?’ We’ve built a curated dashboard of wellness businesses for you to explore that addresses several gaps:

  • This directory doesn’t focus on only one specialty, because we know most people are in search of a well-rounded care team. We’ve included listings across almost 20 different wellness categories–Mental Health Practitioners, Beauty & Skincare, Apparel, Group Fitness and Maternal Wellness, just to name a few.

  • It’s free to use and free to be listed. I’ve spent countless hours aggregating this information, but it’s all publicly available data. I think it’s an important offering to the community that should first and foremost be accessible.

  • We prioritize BIPOC-led and owned businesses. Using publicly available data, I’ve labeled businesses to help aid your search so you can filter by ‘Black-owned,’ ‘Spanish speaking’ or several other demographic filters.
