Groundbreaking new wellness center opens in Evanston
A groundbreaking wellness center in Evanston is proving that community health extends far beyond traditional fitness facilities. The AUX, which opened its doors in May 2025 represents a revolutionary approach to holistic wellness specifically designed to serve Black and brown communities.
The innovative 16,500-square-foot space challenges conventional definitions of wellness by addressing fundamental needs that impact overall health. Rather than focusing solely on exercise and nutrition, The AUX recognizes that true wellness encompasses financial stability, safe community spaces, and access to essential services.
The hub's anchor tenant, The Laundry Cafe, exemplifies this holistic approach. Created by two Evanston police officers and cousins, Jacqui White and Tosha Wilson, the space transforms the mundane task of doing laundry into a community experience.
Perhaps most significantly, The AUX addresses critical health disparities head-on. The Sokana Collective, a doula training academy housed within the center, directly confronts the alarming maternal mortality rates affecting Black women.
The center also houses Embrace Your Crown, a salon specializing in hair care education for multiracial families, recognizing how proper hair care impacts children's self-esteem and school attendance. Additional tenants will include a community kitchen, podcast studio, and business incubation spaces.
Many of the entrepreneurs operating within The AUX are graduates of Sunshine Enterprise, a business academy that has been nurturing neighborhood talent since 2012. This connection ensures that the businesses understand the unique challenges facing their communities.
As Black and brown communities nationwide grapple with health disparities, The AUX offers a blueprint for addressing wellness through community connection, economic empowerment, and culturally competent care.
